Choosing a Brushless Motor for an Industrial Drone: What Should You Consider?

When buying motors for an industrial drone, one of the first questions is usually about thrust.
How much thrust can the motor provide? What propeller should be used? Can it work with a 6S or 12S battery?
These are important questions, but they are not enough to determine whether a motor is suitable for a particular UAV.
We often find that buyers focus on maximum thrust when comparing different motors. In practice, the working conditions matter just as much as the maximum performance.
Start with the Drone, Not the Motor
Before looking at motor models, it is worth understanding the aircraft.
A motor designed for a small FPV drone has very different requirements from one used on an agricultural or industrial multirotor.
For a larger UAV, the following information is particularly useful:
- Total takeoff weight
- Number of motors
- Expected payload
- Propeller diameter and pitch
- Battery voltage
- Required flight time
For example, a six-motor drone carrying inspection equipment will have different requirements from a four-motor platform with a similar total weight.
The motor selection should reflect the actual aircraft configuration rather than simply choosing a larger motor.
Maximum Thrust Is Not the Whole Story
A motor may produce impressive thrust during a short test, but that does not necessarily mean it is suitable for continuous operation.
For commercial applications, we would also look at current consumption and motor temperature.
Consider two motors that can both provide the required thrust. If one draws considerably more current under the same test conditions, it may place additional demands on the battery and ESC.
This is why a useful motor test report should include more than a thrust figure.
Ideally, it should show the battery voltage, propeller model, thrust, current, input power, and temperature under clearly stated test conditions.
Why Propeller Matching Makes Such a Difference
The propeller has a direct influence on motor load.
Changing the propeller diameter, pitch, or blade count can significantly change current consumption and motor temperature.
A motor that performs well with one propeller may not deliver the same results with another.
This is particularly important for larger multirotor drones, where propulsion efficiency has a direct effect on flight endurance and payload performance.
If you are asking a supplier to recommend a motor, sending the propeller specifications along with the battery voltage will make the selection process much easier.
Don't Forget the ESC and Battery
The motor is only one part of the propulsion system.
The ESC needs to handle the expected operating current, while the battery must supply enough power without excessive voltage drop.
For this reason, we recommend checking the complete setup before confirming a motor configuration.
A motor with a high power rating does not automatically require an ESC with the same numerical rating. What matters is the actual current under the selected operating conditions, together with appropriate safety margins.
What Information Should You Send When Requesting a Motor Quote?
If you are sourcing brushless motors for a new UAV project, you do not need to prepare a complicated technical document before contacting a supplier.
Start with these details:
- Drone application and estimated takeoff weight
- Number of motors
- Battery voltage
- Propeller size
- Required thrust per motor
- Estimated order quantity
Even if some specifications are not finalized, these details provide a useful starting point.
Final Thoughts
Selecting a brushless motor for an industrial drone is not simply a matter of finding the motor with the highest thrust.
The better choice is the one that works properly with the aircraft, propeller, ESC, and battery under real operating conditions.
